FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT GREYHOUNDS

Newman
Newman

Newman is a 2-year-old brindle male born in 2007. His registration tattoo is illegible, as is the month of his birth. Newman was turned in as a stray to the Amarillo Humane Society. Newman has been evaluated by Dr. Christy Soileau and Dr. Jeff Ellis of VCA Preston Park Animal Hospital. His right shoulder muscle is atrophied due to a previous traumatic injury which has caused permanent nerve damage. He does not seem to be in any pain at all, but occasionally limps. It is obvious that Newman was psychologically traumatized sometime in his past, as he is very frightened of people. His foster home is being very, very patient and working with him daily, and improvement is being made slowly.

Newman is not cat tolerant and has not yet been tested with small animals.

From Newman's Foster Mom:

You've come a long way, baby! That's the phrase that comes to mind when I think over the last few months my husband and I have spent caring for our darling Newman. This very special boy was quite skinny and frightened when we took him into our home. When I look at him today – at a normal weight, with his beautiful, shiny and soft red brindle coat -- it's hard to believe he's the same dog who captured our hearts when he was at such a vulnerable stage of his life.

Newman is amazingly resilient and is making greyt progress in overcoming his injury and the trauma of his former life. While he is still very shy, he has learned to trust his foster mom and dad, so we are sure that he could also learn to love and trust that special adopter who is ready to shower him with lots of tender love and care.

The "new" Newman loves hanging out with our other greys, and he especially enjoys taking long walks with them. His shyness comes out when we encounter strangers on the street. He can't hide from them fast enough or curl his tail around far enough. He has never growled or snapped; he is just a very shy boy who needs some time to get to know people before he can trust them.

While his shoulder injury makes him a little unsteady when he stands up, Newman shows no signs of pain. He has no trouble running or walking. One of his eyes appears to have been injured and, as a result, is slightly almond shaped. We think that's just one more trait that makes this boy so endearing! When he looks at me or takes a treat from me, it melts my heart.

Very recently, Newman has discovered toys! It is such a joy to see him at play. The "floppier" the toy, the better! Newman is very comfortable in his crate and eagerly goes in it, especially if it's meal time.

Our brave boy is not fazed at all by loud noises or thunderstorms. He enthusiastically greets us at the door when we return home, no matter how long or short the absence. Newman has become very sociable with our other canine family members, so we believe he would probably do best in a home with at least one other dog, preferably another greyhound.

The person who adopts Newman will be repaid a hundredfold with this darling boy's unconditional love and affection. Maybe YOU are just the right person to provide the forever home for this very special boy!
