Sgt. Pepper
Sgt. Pepper

Update: 7/10/08

Sgt. Pepper is a very sick, 2-year-old, white and fawn male born June 2006. His right ear is legible, but his left ear (bruised on the inside and covered with freshly applied green ink) is not clear at this time. He was found as a stray and picked up by the North Texas Humane Society – very, very thin and covered with ticks. The outside of his ears were covered with dried blood from fly bites.

Sgt. Pepper

Sgt. Pepper had a severe reaction to the tick medicine - ProMeris - that was applied to him, which sent him into acute liver distress. He is positive to Ehrlichia, Lyme disease, and Babesia in addition to having a severe load of internal parasites. Dr. Jeff Ellis and Dr. Christy Soileau of VCA Preston Park Animal Hospital have prescribed a treatment regime to give him liver support. As soon as he is stabilized, treatment for his tick-borne diseases will begin. Sgt. Pepper is one sick, sick greyhound; he is being closely watched and cared for by his foster mom.

The special medical treatment cost needed by Sgt. Pepper is why the Miss Mesa Fund was established. If you would like to help with Sgt. Pepper's care, please take a moment to make a donation to the fund. You can use a credit card, check or PayPal by making the donation through the GALT GreytStore. You can also write a check (Greyhound Adoption League of Texas, P.O. Box 680, Addison, TX 75001) and note Miss Mesa Fund/Sgt. Pepper on your check.

Update 7/10/08
Sgt Pepper is doing much better, and has completed all his treatments. He will be retested July 16, and we have our fingers crossed that there has been a marked improvement in his tick titers.

Update 5/27/08
As you can see by the pictures, Sgt. Pepper is doing better. His bloodwork shows improvement in his liver values, and he is finished with the supportive liver care. He has received his first treatment for the Babesia and, of course, continues with his daily medication for the Ehrlichia and Lyme diseases which will continue for at least 4 more weeks.

Update 5/8/08
Dr. Soileau and Dr. Ellis have been keeping a close watch over Sgt. Pepper by doing frequent blood work. He has improved substantially from the condition he arrived in, and will be kept on the liver support medicine for several more weeks. He is taking daily medication for his Ehrlichia and Lyme disease, and it is hopeful he will begin treatment for his Babesia in the next week.
