HAPPY NEW YEAR!

As we start out this New Year, GALT wants to sincerely thank you for your support and involvement. During 2007, GALT processed 230 Greyhounds with 49 being severely injured and ill greys requiring special medical treatment.  This is an expensive endeavor for GALT, and it is only because of the generosity of supporters, volunteers, fosters, and adopters that this many Greyhounds were able to find their forever homes.

Texas is in a crisis with so many available Greyhounds needing to find forever homes. The track at Corpus Christi closed on December 31, 2007, and there are approximately 150 remaining Greyhounds that need homes, either through groups here in Texas, or hopefully through groups outside the state. However, many groups outside the state are full also with the closing of so many tracks in Florida and across the country. The dogs are being cared for and are housed in several adoption kennels at the Corpus Christi track. The Texas Greyhound Association, The Texas Racing Commission, and the Corpus Christi track are committed to taking care of these Greyhounds until they are moved or adopted.

As most of you know, GALT is again (for the 6th year) the sole adoption outlet for Valley Race Park (VRP) in Harlingen. GALT is committed to those Greyhounds grading out or injured (within six weeks 12 have been received already with career-ending injuries). VRP is open until the first weekend in April 2008. Based on previous years, GALT can expect to take anywhere from 120 to 150 greyhounds during this four-month racing season at VRP.

Gulf Greyhound Park in LaMarque, Texas, is still operating, and most of its dogs are adopted through its on-site adoption center. However, there are kennels at Gulf Greyhound Park that are also going out of business and have Greyhounds to place into adoption.

GALT wants you to know the status of the Greyhounds from the Texas tracks. If you have been thinking of fostering (emergency, injured and sick, vacation, or regular) or adding to your current family, NOW IS THE TIME to step up. Please contact Suzanne Cody, Foster Coordinator, at sdcody@tx.rr.com. Also, if you know of any adoption groups outside the state of Texas that need Greyhounds, please contact us. This is a critical time for Texas adoption groups.

If you have adopted a GALT Greyhound in 2007, your adoption donation is tax deductible. Your canceled check or credit card receipt may be used as your tax receipt.

GALT is humbled by the generosity of GALT's family, membership, and the Greyhound community. GALT will continue to be committed to all Greyhounds, regardless of condition.

GALT wishes each of you a Happy and Prosperous New Year!

Hurricane Katrina
We are all at a loss on how to help. GALT has been very concerned about our friends affected by Katrina. Here is a letter from Lilla Whitehead, who is part of GPA/LA. Please see some of the organizations helping Hurricane Katrina victims and needing donations.

GALT is Growing

GALT proudly, and with some sadness, announces some changes in its management group.

Teddy Padden has been Treasurer of GALT since its inception in 2001, and as of June 1, 2005, Teddy resigned as Treasurer.

Likewise, Noel Padden, the Fire Chief of Addison, has been the President of GALT since it was formed in 2001. As of July 1, 2005, Noel has resigned as President but will remain a member of the Board of Directors.

Both Teddy and Noel, being the greyhound lovers and GALT supporters they are, will remain active members of GALT's family.

Effective July 1, 2005, David Cole, was elected President of GALT. David is employed by Levi Strauss and brings significant business acumen to GALT. David and Marilynn Cole have Katie along with three GALT greyhounds - Bonnie, George and Stanley, and previously owned Hanna before she went to the Rainbow Bridge. David and Marilynn have had a number of other greyhounds in years past and have a soft spot for the older greys.

Scott Young was elected GALT's new Treasurer. Previously, Scott was GALT Foster Co-Coordinator with his wife, Joann. Scott is employed by Citibank and has years' of financial experience to offer GALT.

In addition to new officers being elected, GALT has added Board Members. Kris Schuster, David Cole and Scott Young were elected to the Board of Directors. Many of you know Kris as she is Vice President and has been an active volunteer and foster for a number of years. Kris manages the Plaza at Preston Center shopping center, as well as other commercial properties in the DFW area. She has years of business knowledge and experience with many contacts in this field.

However, many things remain the same. John McQuade continues as Chairman of the Board, Suzanne Griggs is Secretary and member of the Board of Directors and Susie McQuade remains as a member of the Board of Directors. John, Suzanne and Susie all continue in their same areas of expertise within GALT.

We hope everyone will wish GALT's new officers and directors well as it takes off for another successful year!!! Look for new and wonderful things to happen in the coming months.
