One look into their eyes and you'll melt. Greyhounds are one of the best-natured breeds - smart, sweet, calm, gentle and loving with children and adults. They will enjoy the time you spend with them - anywhere, anytime!

Claudia Presto of the Greyhound Gang (www.greyhoundgang.com) is generously sharing her compiled "Greyhound Guide" with GALT. This comprehensive document is the BEST on-line resource available to future and existing greyhound owners. Please read it thoroughly and print out if you would prefer. Should you have any questions please email GALT. Our sincere thanks to Claudia for allowing GALT to offer this to you.

Greyhounds:

  • are friendly, gentle dogs with an elegance like no other breed
  • thrive on human companionship, love to be the center of attention, and make wonderful household pets
  • are kennel trained, so they take to housebreaking quickly, with a little TLC and patience
  • come in all sizes, colors and ages. They average between 50-85 lbs. and have a life expectancy of 12 years or more
  • require little exercise, but a nice walk 3-4 times a week will make them happy. Remember they've lived in crates most of their lives, so they really are 45 MPH couch potatoes!
  • are very tolerant of children, preferring to walk away when they've had enough. But like any dog, they have their limits that children need to respect
  • are very social, having spent their entire life with other dogs in the kennel, so they get along well with other dogs as companions
  • are not used to cats, so extra time & patience may be required. Prospective adopters who have cats in their homes should discuss this fact with GALT
  • require routine visits to the vet and good dental hygiene. Because of their low level of body fat, they do require special anesthesia for any type of surgery. Make sure you pick your vet accordingly
  • must always be kept on a leash when outside of fenced area since they are sight hounds and can run faster than you!
  • can NOT live as outside dogs
  • do not have the normal doggie odor and shed very little
  • will love you unconditionally!
